State Senate Candidate Dickerson Wins Senate District 20 Seat

November 7, 2012

Hardwork and the Highroad, Cruises to Victory

NASHVILLE, TN. – Dr. Steve Dickerson, the Republican candidate for the State Senate in District 20, has announced that he has received confirmation from his staff that they have called the race in his favor.

“I am extremely proud of the race that we have run since I first announced my intentions for the State Senate in January. Tonight, I am humbled to announce that the voters of this district have entrusted me with their votes to serve as the next State Senator for the 20th District.”

Dr. Dickerson announced his intentions to run for District 20 in January and has since that time run a campaign that has been based on a dynamic volunteer outreach program and tireless fundraising. The Dickerson Campaign has knocked on over 60,000 doors and reached over 100,000 voter contacts throughout the campaign.

“There is no question that over the last eleven months we have worked tirelessly to deliver our message to the voters of the 20th District.” Dickerson continued, “Tonight will be a night of celebration for myself, my staff, and our tremendous base of volunteers that have continued to work day in and day out to ensure that we came out victorious; so that Davidson County could have a strong, sensible voice in the State Senate.”

Dr. Dickerson’s staff confirms that he led his opponent by 8% after early voting numbers were announced. With 36 of 54 precincts reported the Dickerson Campaign has chalked-it-up as a victory for Dr. Dickerson.

“It has been a long, hard fought battle; that unfortunately ended with weeks of desperate, fictitious attacks by my opponent. However, these mere distractions did not deter my campaign from sticking with our plan and reaching the voters of the 20th District with our message,” Dickerson stated. “I am truly humbled to be given this opportunity to serve in the State Senate; and look forward to serving the constituents of the 20th District for the next four years, as a strong, sensible voice.”

State Senate Candidate Steve Dickerson Outraises Opponent Phillip North 2 to 1

October 11, 2012

Cashing in on Tremendous Support… Again

NASHVILLE, TN. – Dr. Steve Dickerson, candidate for the State Senate in District 20, has released that his campaign has raised nearly $240,000 for the third quarter alone.

“After the primary was over we knew that we would be going into the general at a financial disadvantage and would have to work hard to close the gap,” said Dickerson. “We have worked tirelessly to reach the voters of the 20th District in all aspects, and obviously fundraising was no exception to this plan.”

Dr. Dickerson’s third quarter campaign disclosure shows the campaign has raised $237,700; in comparison Dr. Dickerson’s opponent, Phillip North, only raised $108,802.62 in the same time period.

“There is no denying the fact that the third quarter is the most crucial quarter to raise money, and we knew that.” Dickerson continued, “The disclosures are one meter of how a campaign can measure how their message is resonating with the voters; and the fact that the disclosures show that we have outraised our opponent by a margin of more than 2 to 1, means that the voters of the 20th District are connecting with our message.”

Each candidate is required by State law to report all campaign contributions and expenditures each quarter, the third quarter filing was due by October 10th. The third quarter campaign financial disclosures cover the period of July 24, 2012 through September 30, 2012.

“I continue to be more than humbled by the tremendous amount of financial support that our campaign has received,” Dickerson stated. “Each contribution is an investment into our message and we will continue to work until District 20 has a strong, sensible voice in the State Senate.”

State Senate Candidate Dickerson picks up endorsement from Nashville Business Coalition

October 2, 2012

Another Business Group Aligns Behind Dr. Dickerson

NASHVILLE, TN. – Dr. Steve Dickerson, the Republican candidate for the State Senate in District 20, has announced today that his campaign has received the endorsement from the Nashville Business Coalition (NBC).

“I am very pleased to announce that the Nashville Business Coalition has endorsed my campaign,” stated Dickerson. “Their endorsement is yet another testament to the importance of having a person with real small-business experience to serve in the State Senate, so they can serve as an advocate for business friendly policies for Tennessee.”

The Nashville Business Coalition has served, since 1999, as a pro-business political action committee that is dedicated to electing business-friendly candidates who have made the long term economic vitality of Nashville a priority. The NBC has a long history of only endorsing candidates who support economic development incentives, an overall reduction of burdensome regulations and the general support of free market principals.

“While the State is moving in the right direction, in regard to fostering a robust economy by removing burdensome regulations and red tape, we must continue to fight in order to create the best economic environment possible.” Dickerson continued, “Economic growth and job creation will be of top priority to me while serving in the State Senate, therefore I will be an advocate for implementing policies that will remove government regulations that hinder job growth.”

Please join Governor Bill Haslam at a Reception in Honor of Dr. Steve Dickerson

State Senate Candidate Dickerson commends Governor Haslam’s Decision on Great Heart Academies

September 18, 2012

NASHVILLE, TN. – Dr. Steve Dickerson, the Republican candidate for the State Senate in District 20, has announced today that he supports the expected decision by the Tennessee Department of Education and Governor Bill Haslam to withhold non-classroom, administrative BEP funding from the Metro Nashville Public Schools as consequence of the districts refusal to follow new state law.

“Later today, Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman and Governor Bill Haslam are expected to announced that the State will withhold the BEP funding to the MNPS; while this is an unfortunate situation, it is a necessary consequence for a district that has violated state law,” stated Dickerson.

The withholding will be approximately $3.4 million of non-classroom, administrative BEP funding from the school system; the BEP money is the state’s share of the non-classroom components of the state Basic Education Program funding formula. The BEP funding does not affect classroom spending for the school district.

“This issue is one that brings into opposition two of my most deeply held beliefs of maintaining local autonomy and improving education in Tennessee; at times when two principle conflict with each other, we must evaluate each situation on a case by case basis.” Dickerson continued, “In this instance, when you have a school district that has chosen multiple times to not comply with state law, even after advice from their own legal counsel advising otherwise, the State will be making the right decision to step in to ensure that the students of MNPS are afforded the right to school choice.”

State Senate Candidate Steve Dickerson Picks Up Small Business Endorsement

September 6, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 6, 2012 – Dr. Steve Dickerson, the Republican candidate for the State Senate in District 20, has announced that his campaign has been endorsed by the National Federation of Independent Business.

“I am extremely proud to announce today that my campaign has received the endorsement of the NFIB, Dickerson stated. The NFIB is vital to ensuring that government does not hinder job growth for small business across Tennessee and the nation.”
The endorsement was made by NFIB/Tennessee SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, which is comprised exclusively of NFIB members. The NFIB only endorses candidates that they feel will jump start the economy and job growth for the state. The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6.

“I look forward to working with the NFIB and other pro-business groups to ensure that we get the most Tennesseans back to work as possible.” Dickerson continued, “Small business growth is vital in creating an economy in our state that is envied across the nation. We have done a good job at creating a pro-business environment in our state, but there is still work to be done.”

“Steve Dickerson will be a very strong supporter of free enterprise in Nashville and will work to protect small businesses in Senate District 20,” said Jim Brown, state director of NFIB/Tennessee. “Steve Dickerson is the clear choice for small business in this important race because he will emphasize reducing the burdens of government on hard-working entrepreneurs.”

Oak Hill Mayor to Head Finances

NASHVILLE, TN. – Dr. Steve Dickerson, the Republican candidate for the State Senate in District 20, has announced that his new campaign treasurer will be Oak Hill Mayor, Austin McMullen.

“I am extremely proud to announce that our Campaign Treasurer for the General will be Mayor Austin McMullen. We are very pleased to have Austin join our team and help us ensure that Senate District 20 will have a strong voice in the State Senate.”

Dr. Dickerson announced the change in his treasurer just weeks after his victory in the Republican Primary, which took place on August 2nd. The State of Tennessee requires that all campaigns appoint a campaign treasurer before they are allowed to collect any contributions.

Beyond being a devoted husband and father, Austin McMullen is a practicing attorney and graduate of Vanderbilt Law School. McMullen was recently re-elected to his second term on the Oak Hill Board of Commissioners and is currently serving his second term as Mayor of Oak Hill.

“I am excited and looking forward to serving as the treasurer for Dr. Dickerson’s campaign,” McMullen stated. “As a Mayor, I understand the importance of having qualified leaders to serve in the General Assembly and believe that Dr. Dickerson is the best candidate to represent the 20th District in the State Senate.”
